In the winter months especially when there is a decline of the lemming population (their main prey) snowy owls migrate from the high arctic to the south, sometimes as south as northern California or even Florida. While i had seen them mostly on the frozen plains and fields of Quebec and Ontario in Canada i was quite surprised to see a snowy owl on drifting sea ice in southern BC. These unique birds are perfectly camouflaged and it took quite some time until i noticed it. For more owl photos click here.
