NOVEMBER 2020

The rock ptarmigan is a medium sized bird about the size of a chicken. It is widely spread in alpine regions but yet hard to find. It is molting several times a year and so it’s perfectly adapted to its habitat, grey and brown during the summer and almost pure white during the winter months. Rock ptarmigans feed on seeds and grass, in the winter months they’re looking for areas where the wind has blown away the snow to get better acces to food. Finding white rock ptarmigans in snowy conditions wasn’t easy but after a couple hours we found a group of them and we were able to get some nice shots. This shot was taken in the Bavarian Alps, for more wildlife of Bavaria, click here.
