To watch and photograph wild capercaillie in Europe you usually have to sit in a hide from the brick of dawn and be absolutely quiet as these birds are very shy. There are however some capercaillies which have some kind of hormon disorder. So they are in courthsip display all day and for a much longer time than the normal breeding season. Their testosterone level is one hundred times higher during courtship than during normal times. The good thing is they are easy to see and photograph, the difficult thing is to keep enough distance because they will see you as a rival and will attack you right away. We had some brief but very intense encounters with such a capercaillie in the bavarian alps while on a hike. To see more capercaillie pictures click here.
