The rock ptarmigan is a sedentary species which breeds across Arctic and Subarctic Eurasia and North America on rocky mountainsides and tundra. To be perfectly camouflaged it constantly changes its plumage according the seasons. From pure white in winter to grey and brown in the summer. Their diet also adapts to the seasons and consits of seeds, berries, grass and leaves. The Bavarian Alps is the only place where rock ptarmigans can be found in Germany. With only 150-200 breeding couples left they are on the red list in Germany. For more wildlife of Bavaria click here.
