Prairie dogs are herbivorous burrowing ground squirrels native to the grasslands of North America. Their distribution ranges from Northern Mexico to Southern Canada, in the US mainly west of the Mississippi. They are considered as a keystone species becaus they are an important food source for many small predators like ferrets and foxes. Besides that many other species use their abandoned burrows for their offspring. Prairie dogs are highly social and live in big colonies which makes it harder for predators to approach unseen…This shot of prairie dogs on top of their den i took on my last Denver layover at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR.
