The sand lizard is one of five lizard species found in Germany and probably the most common one. They prefer sunny rocky habitats like stone walls, rocky gardens and forest patches with low vegetation. During the mating season males change their color to a bright green while the females stay gray or brown. Sand lizards need the sun to warm up before beginning to hunt. They mainly feed on insects like ants, grasshopper or bugs. Their numbers here in Germany are in decline and they are on the red list of endangered species, main cause again: Industrial agriculture and loss of habitat. For more reptiles photos click here.
