American bisons once roamed the great plains in millions from the Rocky Mountains almost as far as to the East Coast in large herds, sometimes several thousands strong. In the 19th century the bison population almost got extinct from slaughter and from bovine diseases from cattle. Nowadays there are only very few bisons living wild and free in North America, most bison live in nationalparks and wildlife reserves. North of Denver is a wildlife refuge where bison still can be seen. For more pictures of Colorado wildlife click here.
