OCTOBER 2022

The salmon run along the pacific northwest coast is one of the most important migrations on the planet. Every fall millions of salmon return from the ocean to the rivers exactly to the same location where they were born. After mating in the shallow creeks and rivers they die. Not only bears but also wolves, coyotes, foxes, birds of prey and many other animals feed on the salmon during their migration. Some of these animals carry the salmons into the woods and a lot of the rotting carcasses deliver nutritions to the pacific rainforest. This and the past year severe draughts and lack of rain in the summer months caused many rivers to run dry. In some cases the salmons didn’t  have the strenght for waiting so long in the ocean or the bigger rivers and many of them died before they could reach their breeding grounds. This has again a huge impact on the whole ecosystem of the North Pacific. Scientists are very concerned about the future years as the impact is already so clearly visible…Climate change couldn’t be more obvious!  For more pictures of wildlife in Canada click here.
