Northern Elephant Seals were once hunted almost to extinction. In the last few years, their numbers have been growing again, and there are a few places in California where they come on land to molt and to breed. Molting season is in the summer, and mating and birthgiving season as well as mating is in the winter. The rest of the year, they spend in the open ocean diving up to 3000m on hunting squid and fish. The males sometimes travel up to Alaska to feed.
